Terminal Condition

The romance novels are
attempting suicide,
leaping from top shelf
one after another
with single-minded
purpose.

Can they no longer
Suspend disbelief in
themselves? Is cognitive
dissonance a terminal
condition for Story,
for any creature
composed entirely of
ideas?

Or does despair plague
fruit of under-
developed imaginings,
trapped within melodramatic
caricatures, narratives
too anemic to summon
or sustain authority
empowered to shape,
to build new worlds
anew?
